Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

I guess Cuba is often held up as a socialist economy, since it is mostly state-owned and state-controlled with free education and health care, etc.

Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

China, like its ruling party, is Communist only in name and indeed State Capitalism is correct. I guess the USSR throughout most of its history was Socialist, given that the State owned the means of production, and ostensibly was run by a Communist ideology aiming at introducing Communism eventually...

Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

chownah, regarding your first post, there are clearly varying levels of regulation. For instance, in NZ, building industry used to have to conform to strict guidelines. Then a government relaxed them, saying that the industry would self-regulate more efficiently, then after a disaster ensued (uninha...

Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

Chownah, certainly worker-owned and managed businesses is an interesting model. https://hbr.org/1987/09/how-well-is-employee-ownership-working Kim, Scandinavia is basically a neo-liberal capitalist system with a large social net. There is fairly marginal public owndership which operates in essential...

Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

Thanks, folks for responding. How is China Communist, Kim? Communism means everything is state-owned, there is no money, etc. It has private ownership of the means of production and exchange of money for goods and services, i.e. Capitalism. Chownah, guns are also value-neutral, they are a lump of me...

Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

The example with mercury is salient as it shows that without proper controls, without the essential checks and balances, Capitalism in the modern world leads to destruction of the environment as well as erosion of worker's rights, etc. It seems to be a case of wilful blindness given the examples of ...

Re: Should Capitalism be outgrown?

Perhaps Capitalism can be outgrown, perhaps it can be re-imagined, I don't know. One thing is certain - the way it runs now is causing a lot of pain both to its citizens and the planet. If Capitalism is taken in its most basic form as free enterprise plus exchange of money for goods and services, th...

Re: The Empire's appetite for war

In any case, argue the point, not the man. In this reply, you have not actually addressed any of my (or NYT's) points. Not one. Nada. Hi Dan, first of all, I apologize for the tone of my earlier post (not the substance) and I think I should have tried to find a nicer way to say the same thing. That...

Re: The Empire's appetite for war

Sometimes appeasement leads to war, emboldening an aggressor. Sometimes withdrawal leads to more bloodshed. Some considerations for the present case are outlined here: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/19/opinion/editorials/trump-syria-withdrawal.html Oh, right. The NYT, who has never seen a US-led w...

Re: The Empire's appetite for war

As much as we can and should be critical of any military action, I find it disingenuous to frame it in these simplistic terms as war-mongers versus the peace lovers. Sometimes appeasement leads to war, emboldening an aggressor. Sometimes withdrawal leads to more bloodshed. Some considerations for th...

Re: "Russiagate": reality and hysteria

As far as anecdotal reports go, before leaving Australia I had the privilege to chat with a very distinguished scientist who still has many contacts with Russia (and that's why I don't want to mention his name), who shared with me how the nationalistic anti-Western groupthink had taken hold even amo...

Re: "Russiagate": reality and hysteria

Much of the evidence in the public domain. ... All of this is in the ublic domain and I have posted it elsewhere. In my opinion, this is factually untrue. Could you link us to any such evidence? 'Any such evidence'?? This is called willful blindness, unless you hold what you believe to the same str...

I've posted evidence to you before, Well, certainly not on this thread. Where is your evidence? I think it's only fair I comment on what you said here in this thread. but you choose to ignore or apply a high standard of scepticism to whatever goes against your pre existing views while readily belie...

No point.

I've posted evidence to you before, but you choose to ignore or apply a high standard of scepticism to whatever goes against your pre existing views while readily believing whatever confirms them. So it's not intended for you but because this forum should not be one member's sandpit.

Re: "Russiagate": reality and hysteria

There is of course hysteria and vested interests in keeping an anti-Russia mood and crank up the war machine. And then there is Individual-1 and his favourite kleptocratic autocrat, VV. Following Trump's election campaign, just listing all his statements on Russia, one would have to be wilfully blin...

Re: Gilets Jaunes : a popular uprising?

I guess this as well as Kim's post above belong in the Jokes thread, but in any case, here it goes... A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is politics?" Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I'm the breadwinner of the family, so let's call me Capital. Your Mom, she's the ad...

Re: (Dis)enchantment with Facebook

Jimmy and Steve no longer appear to care much about being truthful and accurate. While their portrayal of Saudi Arabia is largely accurate (with the exception of saying that women can't drive while Prince Mohammed changed that), for the sake of their narrative they call Iran a democracy and paint th...

Re: Gilets Jaunes : a popular uprising?

Screenshot_2018-12-12_02-51-01.png There's no doubt that many many people have legitimate grievances and a systemic change is called for. What is questionable is whether this will make things better and also whether or not operators like the far-right and Putin will indeed exploit it for their purp...
