Re: Ideas for reducing homelessness

Some interesting statistics here: https://endhomelessness.org/homelessness-in-america/homelessness-statistics/state-of-homelessness-report/ Note that California and New York have some of the highest homeless populations in the U.S. Even adjusted for population, finding the rate per 10,000 people, th...

moderation

I have been deliberately hands-off, very liberal in moderation with the forum, to keep the forum from completely dying off. However, it appears some moderation is now necessary. :D

Some posts have been removed from view.

Re: "If you're going to San Franshitsco... Be sure to wear some Hazmat protective gear"

How about taxing the online retail industry to slow it down? Doesnt seem too difficult to do. I believe they already do tax them. It's just the nature of the internet; people like the ease of clicking on a screen instead of getting out. I've seen people order toilet paper online, dog food, other fo...

Re: "If you're going to San Franshitsco... Be sure to wear some Hazmat protective gear"

Is it a net loss or net gain? Yeah, probably net loss. So, Amazon and its headquarters don't really seem to be a solution to problems like unemployment and homelessness, rather part of the problem, really I was speaking about the internet in general, making a shift in general to the labor force. If...

Re: Best possible diet for a lay Budddhist?

My intention was to see which type of diet is not only most ethically in line with Buddhist standards of ethics but also a type of diet that is optimum for the brain so that it provides the least resistance for the mind from a dietary aspect. This is not about saying which type of diet should be ma...

Re: "If you're going to San Franshitsco... Be sure to wear some Hazmat protective gear"

However, the jobs in NYC were for a second headquarters for Amazon, so would not have been any net loss. They were going to be managerial positions.

Re: "If you're going to San Franshitsco... Be sure to wear some Hazmat protective gear"

I tend to agree, but apparently there would have been over 100,000 jobs created; so it appears the positives might have outweighed the negatives. In France, an official report calculated that Amazon destroys 2.2 jobs in proximity retail for each (exploitative and low-paying) job it creates. Yay! Du...

David, does the $4000 include power, gas lines, sewer connections?
Not sure, probably not at that cheap of a price. But if it were constructed on a vacant land with several other tiny houses, that cost could be spread out among the homes, so may not add too much to the price.

Re: Ideas for reducing homelessness

The first and most critical factor in my opinion is full employment. This enables pretty much anyone who is willing and able to work to do so. It also means more money collected in taxation, which if not misappropriated ( e.g. see this topic ) can go towards solutions to address homelessness. :thum...

Re: Ideas for reducing homelessness

The cost of housing also sky rockets sometimes during a good economy due to landlords doing massive improvements to their properties. Then when it is complete, they naturally want to receive some return on their capital outlays, so increase rents. Normally we would like to see property owners improv...

Ideas for reducing homelessness

As an off-shoot of the other topics we have here, so as not to take the other threads further off-topic, I thought I'd start this one to discuss some possible solutions. I don't think we can ever eliminate homelessness, unfortunately. There are some who refuse to move into shelters and other tempora...

Re: Best possible diet for a lay Budddhist?

:goodpost: Thanks, also good point you make below: One thing which I think makes the whole exercise much easier (which in turn makes us more likely to keep going with it) is not to be too hard-line about it. If exceptions to the rule are seen as failures (Christmas dinner, anyone?), they become ver...

Re: Best possible diet for a lay Budddhist?

A lot of this is based on my understanding of the teachings of Buddhism (or at least ones which do not conflict with its standards), but I would like to hear the feedback from Buddhists in this forum. 1. Avoiding meat and fish in the diet. 2. Avoiding animal products such as milk and bee honey. 3. ...

Re: "If you're going to San Franshitsco... Be sure to wear some Hazmat protective gear"

So starting at how many billions in corporate handouts does it start giving the appearance of cronyism? Perhaps that is where we start talking past each other. Much better, thanks, discussing the issues now. Ps: you seem to believe that AOC and people who protested against the Amazon handouts are s...

Re: Best possible diet for a lay Budddhist?

Taking life, beating, wounding, binding, stealing, lying, deceiving, worthless knowledge, adultery; this is stench. Not the eating of meat . “Bodhisattvas should refrain from meat . The smell of meat, O Mahamati, is no different from the stink of corpses. Between the stench of the burning flesh of ...
